El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, el Instituto de Cultura de Baja California, delegación Tecate y la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California invitan a la presentación del documental titulado Cuchumá: La montaña sagrada de Tecate.

La presentación se realizará este viernes 17 de febrero a las 19:00 horas, tiempo del pacífico, en el teatro de la Escuela de Artes de Tecate. Contará con la presencia de Pável Valenzuela, director del documental y de José Manuel Valenzuela, coordinador.

Cuchumá: La montaña sagrada de Tecate, es un video documental que registra la percepción sobre la condición espiritual, mística y ceremonial asociada a la montaña a través de las voces de nativas y nativos k’miai, personajes emblemáticos del yoga y la difusión de la filosofía hindú, neomexicanistas que realizan ceremonias en la montaña, pintores y escultores, que desde una perspectiva secular utilizan al Cuchumá como referente de su producción artística.

El evento cuenta con el apoyo del Gobierno del Estado a través del Instituto de Cultura, la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California y la Escuela de Artes, CAREM, el Taller de Historia de Tecate, Cuautémoc Moctezuma y California Medios.

Interested in learning holistic, social justice approaches
to reproductive and sexual well-being?

Register for the Reproductive and Sexual Justice Healing Circle and Training at San Diego State University!

Drawing from theories and practices developed by women of color, this special one-day event will explore reproductive and sexual health issues, such as abortion, contraception, HIV/STDs and access to health care, within the context of other social justice issues, including economic justice, immigrant rights and LGBTQ rights. We will use holistic, co-counseling techniques (e.g. attentive listening, truthful storytelling, and respectful dialogue) to help build community and inspire activism. By the end, we hope that participants will use this knowledge within their own communities. Given the focus on personal experience and mental and spiritual well-being, please note that the healing circle may elicit strong emotional responses.

Sylvia Méndez is the oldest daughter of Gonzalo Méndez, a Mexican immigrant, and Felicitas Méndez, a Puerto Rican, who fought so she and her brothers could have equal education through the case of Méndez et al v. Westminster et al. Ms. Méndez continues the legacy left by her parents to campaign for education. Ms. Méndez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor, on February 15, 2011.



The Annual Gracia Molina de Pick Feminist Lecture Series honors the founder of the San Diego Mesa College Chicano Studies Department and recognizes her life-long commitment to education, feminism, and dedication to the mission of the community college.

9:00 am sharp- San Ysidro/Tijuana border-bus station. We will walk together to cross the border gate and travel to our locations in Tijuana using chartered buses for transportation.

9:45 am- The crosses at the border: More than 7,000 immigrants have died trying to cross the border.

10:30 am- Otay Industrial Park, Sanyo, Douglas Furniture, other maquiladoras: workers’ labor conditions, labor rights and struggles NOTE: We will visit the Tijuana industrial area but won’t enter any factory.

11:00 am- Community Ejido Chilpancingo-Rio Alamar: industrialization, health, environment, urban development

11:30 pm- Metales y Derivados, a story of struggle and success for environmental justice

12:15 pm- Lunch

1:00 pm- Group dialogue about the experience; time for questions and comments

Price Scholarships

Our mission is to increase the self confidence, cultivate the competence, and strengthen the character of deserving students in San Diego by supporting them in furthering their educational, professional, and career readiness skills.

The Price Scholarship Program assists students from San Diego to complete an Associate Degree and/or Certificate Program at San Diego City College in two to three years. The assistance we provide for students comes in many forms: financial assistance, seminars, individual counseling, mentoring, a program retreat, and social events.

Price Scholarship Program: Price

The Price Scholarship Program is extending an invitation to current City College students to apply to our Price Scholarship Program. Eight City College scholarships are available to students who must:

► Be currently enrolled and in good standing at San Diego City College.

► Residents of the downtown, mid-city, or southeast area of San Diego.

► Have a minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average in their college studies.

► Have graduated from high school within the last 7 years and are interested in completing a Certificate of Achievement, an Associates Degree, Transfer Studies, or a Certificate of Completion.

► Have demonstrated financial need.

► Perform 5 or 8 hours of Community Service/internships weekly with a pre-selected community agency or school throughout their participation in the program.

Scholars will gain valuable experience through structured job shadowing, and community service assignments, with local community agencies, schools, and businesses in City Heights, Balboa Park, and other central and southeastern areas of San Diego.

The scholarship year will begin in June 2012 and may be renewable if the student remains in good standing academically and programmatically. Scholarship participants will perform 5 or 8 hours per week and choose a site from the current list locations and services that offer a range of experiences. Scholars will receive $9,000 over a two year period. Scholars are required to attend regular weekly classes throughout their first year of participation in the program and meet with program staff on an ongoing basis to assess their performance and progress in the program.

Students who are accepted into the program will be required to attend a program orientation in June 2012 before they begin their program in August 2012.

3. Border encuentro Cross-Border Friendship Events Coordinaton


- Facilitate planning with community members who have a passion for a particular theme that reaches across borders in the the organization of an event at Friendship Park
- Reach out to environmental, cultural, artistic and community improvement orgs who have done Border encuentro events in the past and/or shown interest in doing another event.
- Create ideas for new events that bring people together in Friendship and collaboration at the park under a common interest theme.
- Participate and help coordinate on day of events
- Update electronic media (website and social media sites) for Border encuentro
- Learn the Border encuentro dynamic and our role in the Friends of Friendship Park Coalition
- Other duties as assigned by the Lead Community Organizer and according to interests of volunteer

We are pleased to announce that you may be eligible to apply for the Osher Scholar Award offered by the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Please review the eligibility criteria listed below.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must have completed 24 degree applicable units by the beginning of the Fall 2012 semester.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time (6 or more units) during all terms in which the award remains active.
  • Must be enrolled at the college where you will be receiving financial aid.
  • Must be a BOGW recipient for the 2012-2013 school year.
  • Must have applied for a FAFSA for the 2012-2013 school year and demonstrate financial need.
  • Must be making satisfactory progress towards a degree based on the San Diego Community College District’s policy.

If you feel that you meet the above criteria, you can obtain a copy of the scholarship application from the Student Web Services website at: http://studentweb.sdccd.edu and click on the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment ad. Applications will also be available at your college Financial Aid Office.

Cris Mazza is the author of 14 books, including novels, short fiction and a memoir. Many of Mazza's books take place in San Diego and the surrounding county, including Homeland, Trickle-Down Timeline, Indigenous: Growing up Californian, and her new novel Various Men Who Knew Us as Girls, which looks at prostitute-slave trafficking in Southern California.

Zohreh Ghahremani, author of Sky of Red Poppies
Zohreh Ghahremani (Zoe) is an Iranian-American whose book, Sky of Red Poppies, was released October 2010. It focuses on an unusual friendship between two young women coming of age in a politically divided 1960's Iran under rule of the Shah. Her first book, The Commiserator, was published in 2000 in her native language, Persian. Over two hundred of her essays and vignettes – both in English and Persian - have appeared in several magazines and bloggers. Gharemani has written three novels, including The Moon Daughter, which is a finalist in San Diego Book Awards.

Le thi diem thuy, author of The Gangster We Are All Looking For
Lê thi diem thúy was born in Phan Thiet, Southern Vietnam. She and her father left Vietnam by boat in 1978, eventually settling in Southern California. The writer was born in 1972, a year that is remembered in its totality as “the red fiery summer,” a time of fierce attacks from the north that resulted in fires that scorched the countryside. Her novel, The Gangster We Are All Looking For, captures the family’s experience; first appeared in the Massachusetts Review ; and was reprinted in Harper’s. It was included in Best American Essays `97, (as well the edition of Best American Essays that contains a selection of the “best of the best” from the past 12 volumes).

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, author of One Amazing Thing
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author and poet. Her themes include women, immigration, the South Asian experience, history, myth, magic, and celebrating diversity. She writes both for adults and children. Her latest work, One Amazing Thing, was published in 2010.
Divakaruni is also the author of Arranged Marriage, which won an American Book Award. Her other works, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, have been made into films. In addition, Divakaruni is an acclaimed poet whose collection, Leaving Yuba City, won a Pushcart Prize, an Allen Ginsberg Prize and a Gerbode Foundation award. Her writing has been published in over 50 magazines, including the Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker, and been included in over 50 anthologies. Her works have been translated into 20 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian, and Japanese.
The author was born in India and lived there until 1976, when she left Calcutta and came to the United States. She earned a master’s degree in English from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Kumeyaay: Native Californians-- Permanent exhibition
The Kumeyaay, or Diegueño (as they were later called by the Spanish), are the Native American people of present-day Southern California (San Diego and western Imperial Counties) and Northern Baja. For many generations before the arrival of the Spanish, they occupied the deserts, mountains, and coasts, developing sophisticated means of adapting to the diverse environments.
Maya: Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth
The huge Maya monuments displayed in the Rotunda Gallery are casts of the originals from Quirigua, a site in Guatemala. The casts were made for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition and have been on display since then, except during World War II, when the Navy turned the Museum into a hospital. Today these casts are studied by researchers who are tracing the history of the Maya through their hieroglyphic writing. The Museum’s casts are in better condition than the originals, which have suffered some weathering and erosion in the 95 years since the casts were made.
Free Tuesday: On the third Tuesday every month, FREE ADMISSION is offered to all San Diego County residents and active duty military and their families. Please bring your IDs that show county residence or military status.



Mexican Modern Painting
San Diego Museum of Art
Mexican art from the Andres Blaisan Collection. This is one of the premiere collections of 20th-century Mexican art. Assembled over the last 25 years, the collection normally resides at its permanent home at the Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco.  This exhibition features a selection of 80 paintings dated between 1907 and 1962 from this renowned collection as part of a traveling tour of the Blaisten Collection. The exhibited artists include well-known painters María Izquierdo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, and many others. In addition to these important painters, there are several painters with works in the exhibition that might be new to San Diego audiences such as Alfonso Michel, Federico Cantú, and Angel Zárraga.

Heritage of the Americas Museum
The Heritage of the Americas Museum, located on the campus of Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego, California, invites visitors of all ages to experience a journey through time. A Little History: List of scholarships

The Chicano Studies Department at City College was created in 1969. Throughout the years, we have seen students from all walks of life; all of them with different goals, but most of them maintaining two common denominators: motivation and low incomes. These students are the inspiration for this scholarship.

Important Information:
Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $250.00

CRITERIA:

a) Must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien
b) Must have completed 9 units in the Chicano Studies
c) Must enrolled full-time (12 units) at City College in Fall 2011 and Spring 2012
d) Must have a 2.8 GPA or higher
e) Essay: Must submit a two-page typed, double-spaced autobiography with emphasis on future goals
f) Must show involvement in Chicano/Latino activities on or off campus

SCHOLARSHIP WILL BE ADVERTISED: September 8, 2011 to December 8, 2011

APPLICATION DEADLINE: December 8, 2011 at NOON – NO EXCEPTIONS

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Return completed application and all necessary materials to: Office of Student Affairs (D-106)

AWARD DATE: April 28, 2012, at the Annual Scholarship Awards Presentation.
Attendance is required for release of scholarship funds. Non-Attendance will, in most cases, result in forfeiture of scholarship award.SAN DIEGO CITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION

David Schmidt of C.A.F.E. is a great-grandchild of immigrants from Russia, and has been involved in urban and rural indigenous communities in Mexico over the last decade, and has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of lopsided trade policies and neoliberal economics on the poorest communities in the world.

David will present a critical view of the current discussion of "immigration reform", in light of the unfair trade policies—pushed by the U.S. Government itself—which force people to migrate. Unless the US drastically increases the ability to legally immigrate to the US and drastically changes US trade policies like NAFTA which push massive migration, the fundamental problems facing immigrants will continue.
