On August 31, the Mexican TRIFE (Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary) confirmed that corruption rules Mexico. Discounting evidence of electoral fraud, the TRIFE confirmed Enrique Peña as the winner of the presidential election.

#Yo Soy 132 San Diego call out to all Mexicans in San Diego who are tired of the corrupt political rule in Mexico to participate in a protest in front of the Mexican Consulate. This is a peaceful, non partisan demonstration of our frustration with the violations of the Mexican Constitution in the past presidential elections.

All San Diego residents interested in justice and democracy, regardless of their nationality, are invited to participate.

We don´t want to be accomplices of corruption in Mexico. See you Thursday!

Community College Scholarship Fall 2012

The California Community Colleges Student Financial Aid Administrators Association will again sponsor student scholarships; a total of twenty $500 student scholarships, two $500 scholarship for each of the ten CCCSFAAA regions across the State. Each California community college is asked to promote the scholarship competition on their campus and nominate up to two students for the scholarship.

The deadline for the student to submit his/her application materials to the City College Scholarship Office, Room D-106 is October 3, 2013 before noon.

Student winners will be notified by letter in November and checks will be mailed to the winners shortly thereafter.

As a continued effort against Free Trade Agreements, Af3irm San Diego in collaboration with The Centro Cultural de la Raza will be presenting the film MAQUILAPOLIS [city of factories] by Vicky Funari and Sergio De La Torre. Following the film is a panel discussion with local groups on how to continue the efforts against Free Trade Agreements (old and new) in our bordering communities.

About the film

"To create MAQUILAPOLIS, the filmmakers brought together factory workers in Tijuana and community organiza...tions in Mexico and the U.S. to collaborate on a film that depicts globalization through the eyes of the women who live on its leading edge. The factory workers who appear in the film have been involved in every stage of production, from planning to shooting, from scripting to outreach. This collaborative process breaks with the traditional documentary practice of dropping into a location, shooting and leaving with the "goods," which would only repeat the pattern of the maquiladora itself. The process embraces subjectivity as a value and a goal. It merges artmaking with community development to ensure that the film's voice will be truly that of its subjects."

We have finally received word from SDSU that Cross Enrollment will be available to our students for Summer 2012. With our Summer Session being cancelled, students are typically required to be in a min. 6 units to take advantage of Cross Enrolling. SDSU is willing to waive that 6 unit requirement to allow our students to Cross Enroll (1 class) for the summer as long as the other criteria is met.

Cross Enrollment Criteria:

Min 6 units on home campus (Waive only for Summer 2012)

Sal Castro and the Chicano Struggle for
Educational Justice

Dr. Mario Garcia and Sal Castro will discuss their recently published book Blowout! Sal Castro and the Chicano Struggle for Educational Justice at Mesa College on Thursday, May 3, 2012 in room H-117/118 at 9:35AM-11AM. Based on oral history, this book is the life-story of a remarkable high school teacher, Sal Castro, who in 1968 inspired the Chicano students of the East Los Angeles public schools to stage a massive walkout to protest years of school discrimination and educational inequality that affected Mexican American students. These walkouts came to be known as the “blowouts” and represent a seminal event of the Chicano Movement of that era. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Mario T. García is professor of Chicana/o studies and adjunct professor in history and religious studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Sal Castro is an American educator and activist.
