Join Professor Norell Martinez for this week’s topic which will focus on Afro-Mexicanos and their current political struggles in Mexico. We will also discuss their contributions to music and dance movements in Mexico and the influence of these Afro-Mexican musical traditions on Chicanx youth today, which has helped raise awareness amongst Chicanxs about the often-ignored tercera raiz, or “Third Root” of Mexico.
Furthermore, we will look at the intersections between Chicanxs and other Afro-Latinx/Caribbean communities in the US through music, dance, visual arts and spiritual movements, thus raising consciousness about the importance of building movements of solidarity between Black and Brown communities in the United States.
