SAN DIEGO—September 14, 2017 — Beginning September 29, the San Diego City College Dramatic Arts Program will present six productions of the Luis Alfaro drama Electricidad. Playing in the college Black Box Theatre, tickets are available for Fridays and Saturdays, September 29, 30, October 6, and 7 at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays, October 1 and 8 at 2:00 p.m.

Directed by Drama Professor and Co-Chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department, Dr. Katie Rodda, Electricidad is a radical, contemporary retelling of the Electra myth. Alfaro has set his play in East Los Angeles following the brutal murder of “el Rey del Barrio,” Agamemnón. His oldest daughter, Electricidad, mourns his death, keeps vigil over his dead body, and plots revenge on the one responsible for her father’s death: her own mother Clemencia. Her solemn promise: “I will free you, Papa, from your death. I don’t know how yet, but I will do it.”

Invoking cholo culture and voiced in a combination of English and Spanish, Electricidad is an unforgettable story of loyalty, passion, and familia. Rodda shared, “Greek mythology has always been an interest of mine, and I think what Alfaro has done with the play is brilliant.”

Rodda said she came across this play about eight years ago and it stayed with her all these years. While searching for a play to open the 2017-2018 season that would be “accessible to our Latina/o students and honored their culture”, Rodda envisioned Electricidad on the Black Box stage. With the cast all bilingual English/Spanish, Rodda said, “The students have embraced this gritty, dark material with passion, dedication, and a bit of humor.”

The student cast includes Roxanna Camargo (La Carmen), Roberto Castillo, Jr. (Nino), Estefania de la Torre (La Cuca), Lizette Hernandez (Electricidad), Ana Karen Ibarra (Abuela), Martha Lopez (Ifigenia), Natalia Maggio (Clemencia), Omar Ramos (Orestes), and Stephane Robles (La Connie). Supporting the cast is Assistant Director Jessica Bravo and Stage Manager Andrew Pacheco; with Scenic, Costume, and Sound Design by City College Professors Duane Gardella, Elisa Benzoni, and Robert Kostlan. Lighting Design is by Robert Norberg.

Electricidad was originally produced at Borderlands Theater in Tucson, Arizona in association with the National New Play Network, and the assistance of the Fund for New American Plays, a project of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The project includes support from Countywide Home Loans, Inc., the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation and the Laura Pels Foundation in cooperation with the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

Advisory: Electricidad contains adult language, violence, and mature themes. It is recommended for audiences over the age of 14.

English- On September 26, 2014, the news of the forced disappearance of 43 students and the murder of three more youths of the normal rural school Raúl Isidro Burgos in Ayotzinapa, Guerrero, shook all Mexico. From the outset and with the participation of independent investigators, it has been verified that in this act of vicious repression participated police agents of city, state and national level, as well as personnel of the Mexican Military. In fact, evidence has been found that cell phones of some of the missing students were used months later from the military facilities. The state's position has been to hinder the lines of investigation, be reluctant to follow the recommendations of the expert group of the Commission on Human Rights, and insist on its "historical truth" that says that the students were burned in a dump by a criminal gang. Three years after the massacre, join us this September 26th to send a message of solidarity from San Diego to the fathers and mothers of the 43 disappeared students who continue to demand the state Truth and Justice, because #VivosSeLosLlevaronVivosLosQueremos.

Tim Z. Hernandez on the Bracero program- Oct 11, 2017

ALL THEY WILL CALL YOU
October 11
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
MS 162

Tim Z. Hernandez was born and raised in California's San Joaquin Valley. He is an award-winning poet, novelist, and performer. His latest book is a haunting oral history and narrative of unveiling the names and lives of 28 Mexican Bracero laborers who died in a plane crash in Los Gatos Canyon in January 28, 1948. The victims were never identified and were buried in a mass grave with a single plaque for all 28 of them.

All They Will Call You: The Telling of the Plane Wreck at Los Gatos Canyon is the process of naming and telling the unique life stories and thus humanizing the experience of the fate of these Braceros and their legacies of love, loss, hope, and narratives of labor history between the U.S. and Mexico.

The title of the book is inspired by a poem of Woody Guthrie, later becoming an iconic protest song of the 20th century and sung by many folk singers such as Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, among
