Panel and book signing with Professors Justin Akers, Sharon Allen, Aníbal Yáñez as they discuss the impact of borders around the globe on Thursday, September 30 at 12:45 p.m. as part of San Diego City College's International Book Fair.

Justin Akers-Chacón, San Diego City College; Sharon Allen, Southwestern and Palomar Colleges; Aníbal Yáñez, Cal State San Marcos; and other authors, including those from Ireland and South Africa, have collaborated on "Walls, Fences, Borders and Boundaries: Essays on Social Exclusion, Inclusion and Integration." The book focuses on the increase of border walls around the world and their impact on people. Several essays are about the U.S.-Mexico border.

Justin Akers-Chacón is an assistant professor of Chicana/o studies at San Diego City College. He is co-author of "No One is Illegal" with Mike Davis (Haymarket, 2006); a contributing author to "Immigration: Opposing Viewpoints" (Greenhaven, 2004); and a columnist for the progressive magazine Media Project. His articles have appeared in the San Diego Union-Tribune, Miami Herald, Sacramento Bee, and other newspapers.

Sharon Loree Allen, PhD, is a faculty member at Palomar College in San Marcos and Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California. She has developed and taught numerous and varied courses on Islamic cultures and traditions, Western civilization and world history, religion and mythology. Sharon is a member of the Middle East Studies Association and the Modern Language Association and serves as an adviser to numerous Muslim Student Associations. She holds two MA degrees in humanities and in Arabic studies with an emphasis on Middle Eastern history from the American University in Cairo, Egypt, and a PhD from Pacifica Graduate Institute, Carpinteria, California.

Aníbal Yáñez, PhD, is associate professor of geography at California State University San Marcos, where he teaches world regional geography, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies. His research interests are in economic geography, regional change (especially the process of North American integration), and the cultural geography of Mexico. For many years he has been involved in collaborative interdisciplinary projects in the humanities and social sciences. He was an adviser for the public art project Arte-Reembolso/Art Rebate (1993) by Elizabeth Sisco, Louis Hock, and David Avalos.
